In-Field Workshop at The Mashomack Preserve

On Saturday, October 14th, Long Island Photo Gallery was invited to explore a restricted area of The Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, NY.  Photographer Anthony Graziano was the lead instructor for the day, who was also assisted by LIPG Curator and Fine Art Photographer Jessica Lempin.

The day started out with heavy rains, but then stopped around mid day. However, the clouds did not dissipate as the weather outlets predicated. The cloud cover gave us just the natural light challenge we were looking for:  how to shoot landscape images under an overcast, bleak sky.  This did allow for the group to shoot outside their comfort level, which helped attendees to gain a new perspective on in-field photography work .

Our event began with a greeting by Jeremy Samuelson, Mashomack’s Director, who shared with us the interesting history of how the Mahomack Preserve became what it is today. Jeremy also allowed the group access inside the stunning Manor House which is nestled deep within the preserve. The Manor House was recently renovated and is simply breath taking. This was such a unique and exciting opportunity.

During the workshop the attendees were able to photograph landscapes, wildlife, and the beginnings of fall colors within the preserve. There was a footbridge that caught our attention, along with the shoreline along the beach at low tide, marshlands, and a wooded area with plenty of moss and mushrooms.  We were using all sorts of lenses: from wide angle, to telephoto and even macro lenses.  The Mashomack Preserve offered such a variety of subjects to photography.

A special thank you to The Tiffen Company, who provided Long Island Photo Gallery with some variable ND filters along with Davis & Sanford for lending the group a few tripods.

Here are some of the images that were captured during this workshop.  As you can see, we had some fun without the sun.   Thank you to all those who attended.  Looking  forward to the next, great photography adventure with you!
