Among the Trees’ is a collaboration of photographic works of art that bring to life the many variations of trees and forests. From the mighty oak to the fragile sapling, this exhibition will be a collection of finely crafted works that illuminate the majestic beauty and soothing healing power of trees.   Trees continue to play a role in the lives of the photographic artist and this exhibition will have you visually spellbound.

Long Island Photo Gallery‘s Among The Trees Juried Exhibit on Thursday, January 28th, 2021 was just lovely. Many wonderful folks came out to join us announcing the winners and to talk about the art at hand.  Our selected juror of this exhibit was the Nassau County Camera Club President and Fine Art Photographer, Dave Curtin. Dave was unable to join us, but he sent his words to share with the crowd, which we’ve included below. Below are the winning pieces.

Excellence In Photography Honorable Mentions

'Nature’s Magic' by Amy Medina | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Nature’s Magic’ by Amy Medina – This one struck me as really hitting the exhibit’s theme as the two hikers are dwarfed by the towering Redwoods as they are walking along the path. Speaking of which, the trail provided some wonderful leading lines that lead my eye deep into the scene. I’m certain the lighting was rather tricky to handle, as the image covered such a wide dynamic range… The light did produce a wonderful shadow along the path which I found quite lovely. Very nicely done!

GS + BS' by Dawn Reilly | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘GS + BS’ by Dawn Reilly – I thought this piece was handled extremely well, as the b&w image just popped off the print. Excellent contrast between the whites of the trees and the dark areas along the trunks. It was a dynamic piece that grabbed my attention and had a story to tell as well. Very well done!

3rd Place Excellence In Photography Award

Walk with the Light' by Anthony Graziano | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

Walk with the Light’ by Anthony Graziano | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Walk with the Light’ by Anthony Graziano – I really could feel the mood of this piece, especially how those light rays enveloped the trees. What a beautiful mix of light, shadow and soft mist in this composition… It absolutely grabbed my eye upon first glance. This was another high dynamic range type image that the maker took care with the exposure as to not lose the highlights, while still bringing out detail in the shade. I thought it covered the theme very well with the sun being the element Among the Trees. The maker did an excellent job with the final print as well. Outstanding work!

2nd Place Excellence In Photography Award

'Driftwood in the Mist' by Richard LaBella | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Driftwood in the Mist’ by Richard LaBella | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Driftwood in the Mist’ by Richard LaBella – Masterful job by this maker for an outstanding piece from both a print and a processing perspective. I thought the image had a wonderfully clean look to it, and bravo on the composition framing the light among the branches of the tree… That decision was an excellent way to execute your take on the theme. Overall it was a striking scene that had beautiful tonality throughout… The gradation of color in the sky was gorgeous, and the textures found in the branches were fantastic. I also loved the small puddles sitting at the base of the tree, as they really added an extra layer to the image. Congratulations and amazing job!

1st Place Excellence In Photography Award

'Aspen' by Joanna McCarthy | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Aspen’ by Joanna McCarthy | Available at Long Island Photo Gallery

‘Aspen’ by Joanna McCarthy – Simply beautiful… Just a gorgeous image. I’ve seen a number of these types of aspen images attempted, but I thought the maker absolutely nailed this one. From composition to post-processing to final print, this one was masterfully handled. Definitely a work of art. The color palate in this piece was lovely, and communicated the impression of autumn throughout an abstract scene. The composition just drew me and presented a feeling of movement as well. I could envision a cloudy, fall day with a slight wind blowing through these trees. This image definitely spoke to me, and presented me with a story. I thought it just hit on all the important aspects that I was looking for, and just had to award it 1st place in the exhibit. Congratulations to this maker for such a stunning piece!
