A Closer Look at “Double Take”: An Invitation to Experience Reflection Through the Artist’s Eye

At Long Island Photo Gallery, we believe the most powerful art experiences happen when connection meets curiosity—when a viewer not only sees the work but understands the story behind it. Our current exhibit, Double Take, now on view at the Southampton Cultural Center, is a striking example of that philosophy in motion.

This thoughtfully curated exhibition celebrates the art of reflection—both literal and interpretive—through the lens of talented Long Island photographers. But beyond the visual intrigue, what truly defines Double Take is the opportunity it creates: to step inside each artist’s perspective, to hear their stories, and to discover how a single moment can hold layers of meaning.

We invite you to join us for a special Artist Reception on Saturday, March 28th at 12 PM EST, where the artwork comes alive through conversation, insight, and shared experience.

Where Art Invites You to Look Again

The theme Double Take challenges both artist and viewer to pause—to look twice, and then look deeper. Reflections serve as the foundation of this exhibit, but the interpretations are anything but predictable.

From shimmering water surfaces and mirrored architecture to fleeting reflections captured in unexpected places, each photograph reveals a dynamic interplay between reality and illusion. Some works draw you in with quiet subtlety, while others command attention with bold, graphic compositions. Together, they create a visual dialogue that is both cohesive and richly diverse.

This is not simply an exhibit to walk through—it is one to experience with intention.

Meet the Artists. Hear the Stories.

What makes this exhibition truly special is the opportunity to engage directly with the photographers themselves.

At the March 28th reception, you won’t just be observing the work—you’ll be able to stand beside it with the artist who created it. You’ll hear firsthand what drew them to a particular scene, what they saw in that fleeting moment, and how they translated it into a compelling photographic composition.

Why did they choose that reflection?
What did they notice that others might have missed?
What story lives beneath the surface of the image?

These conversations transform the experience. A photograph that initially feels purely aesthetic becomes layered with meaning, intention, and emotion. The scene evolves—because now, you’re seeing it through the artist’s eyes.

A Dynamic Range of Subjects and Perspectives

One of the most captivating aspects of Double Take is the diversity of subject matter. The exhibit moves fluidly between natural and urban environments, between quiet introspection and striking visual contrast.

You may find yourself drawn to:

  • Reflections dancing across coastal waters at golden hour

  • Urban glass and steel transforming the familiar into something abstract

  • Intimate moments where light, shadow, and reflection converge unexpectedly

  • Scenes that challenge your perception of what is real and what is mirrored

Each piece offers a new perspective—an invitation to slow down and reconsider the world around you.

Featuring Juror Nicole Esposito

In addition to the main exhibit, we are honored to present a special showcase featuring the work of our juror, Nicole Esposito.

Her collection provides a deeper understanding of the artistic and curatorial vision behind Double Take. Experiencing her work alongside the selected photographers adds another layer of richness to the exhibit—offering insight into both the selection process and the broader creative dialogue surrounding the theme of reflection.

An Invitation to Experience Art Differently

This reception is not about simply viewing photographs on a wall. It is about connection—between artist and audience, between image and interpretation, between a moment captured and a story shared.

Whether you are an art collector, a photographer, or someone who simply appreciates meaningful visual experiences, this event offers something rare: the chance to engage with art on a deeper, more personal level.
